Signing Ceremony – Top 5 Performers - Remarks by UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, Mr. Lamin M. Manneh

Distinguished representatives of civil society organizations,

It gives me great pleasure to be here today and I would like to express my gratitude to Professor Shyaka and the Rwanda Governance Board for hosting this signing ceremony.

Because of our strong belief in civil society, we have embarked on the journey to strengthen our ties with civil society in Rwanda. This has led to a Joint Program which specifically targets local civil society organizations, and which you all know very well. A strong partnership has been established between the One UN and the Government of Rwanda, and RGB more specifically.

As we started up this work about 2 years ago, you have been part of this journey since the very beginning. Your organizations were among the best ones which were selected in the first round through a competitive and transparent process.

Ever since, we have been closely monitoring your activities. I still remember very well the Joint Field Visit which we undertook last year and where I got to see the concrete results achieved by some of you.

Following a detailed assessment of all the projects, we have concluded that your projects were among the very best in terms of relevance, results achieved but also the potential to scale up. You all reach out to the most vulnerable persons in Rwanda and this is where your assistance is most needed.

So I would like to warmly congratulate you with these results. This is no easy achievement and should not be underestimated. Therefore we are very pleased to extend our support for a new grant agreement with your organizations.

With every support, comes of course as well responsibility. We do count on you to become true champions of Rwandan civil society, to continue making a difference in the lives of those who need it most, but also to inspire your fellow colleagues of civil society.

As we re-commit our support to your organizations, we also hope that this will be able to help you to achieve self-reliance and sustainability.

Let me conclude by expressing again my gratitude to you all for your efforts. Keep up the good work!

I thank you for your kind attention.

Murakoze cyane! Merci beaucoup!
